Hetzner vs DigitalOcean: choose with workload evidence, not a generic winner

Keep Hetzner or DigitalOcean on the shortlist only when the exact region, compute tier, dependencies, whole cost, recovery path and operating responsibility fit the same documented workload.

Provider evidence rechecked 22 October 2026. Catalogs, regions, prices and policies can change; verify the purchase surface immediately before deployment.

First decide whether either platform fits

Hetzner Cloud servers and DigitalOcean Droplets are virtual-machine infrastructure. A friendly console or Marketplace image does not transfer operating-system, application, data and incident responsibility to the provider.

Infrastructure provider

Operates the underlying platform within documented service boundaries. Read the operative SLA for the covered resource, exclusions and credit process.

Your operating owner

Must own patching, hardening, secrets, application updates, monitoring response, backups, restore tests and capacity decisions.

Managed alternative

If those responsibilities lack a named owner and response window, stop this comparison and evaluate a managed host or managed application path.

No laboratory winner: Web Host Lens has not run a comparable long-duration uptime, support-ticket or same-workload benchmark study for these platforms. Marketing claims and third-party tests do not substitute for your canary.

Workload requirements ledger

“Candidate” means worth testing. An unknown critical requirement blocks a decision rather than silently favoring a provider.

On smaller screens, each requirement becomes a labelled card without sideways scrolling.

Architecture gate: Hetzner images and ISOs must match x86 or Arm64. DigitalOcean CPU options vary by Droplet family. Treat architecture, CPU class and regional availability as eligibility facts—not benchmark results.

A region is useful only when the full product path exists

Map pins do not prove workload fit. Check the exact SKU and every dependency, then test from representative user networks.

0 of 6 regional gates acknowledged. Regional fit is unresolved.

Selections remain in this browser and are not transmitted.

Compare the whole architecture, not the first VM line

Exact headline compute prices are deliberately omitted because region, architecture, tier and usage change. Enter one currency and one billing period for both candidates; blank or unknown components block the decision.

Hetzner mechanics to verify

Cloud servers are billed hourly with a monthly cap. Verify x86 versus Arm64 compatibility, included traffic, separately billed Primary IPv4, backup pricing, attached Volume exclusions and every dependency for the selected location.

DigitalOcean mechanics to verify

Droplets remain billable while allocated. Verify bundled versus configurable compute, included outbound transfer, team pooling, backup or snapshot storage, reserved IP behavior and overage for the selected plan.

0 of 8 cost categories acknowledged. No cost comparison is ready.

Recovery must survive more than the provider console

Provider backup

Verify schedule, consistency, retention, regional scope and what happens after resource deletion.

Snapshot

Useful for provider-native recovery and region moves, but not automatically exportable or provider-neutral.

Independent restore path

Keep application and data exports outside the production account, then time and validate a restore.

Record two targets: recovery point objective (acceptable data loss) and recovery time objective (acceptable restoration time). Entering a target does not prove the architecture can meet it.

Interpret support and SLA evidence narrowly

DigitalOcean publishes an instance-level CPU Droplet SLA. Hetzner publishes operative service terms for covered platform resources. A headline percentage is not comparable until scope, exclusions, measurement, remedy, claim evidence and claim window are aligned.

Infrastructure availability

Ask which resource is measured, over what period, which events are excluded and whether the remedy is a service credit.

Application availability

Your service also depends on deployment design, state, DNS, databases, third parties, patching, capacity, monitoring and incident response.

No comparable Web Host Lens support-ticket experiment exists. Do not infer support speed or quality from plan labels alone.

Find the first disqualifier

Complete every field from evidence. The result keeps a platform on the shortlist; it never declares a universal winner.

Frequently asked questions

Are Hetzner and DigitalOcean managed hosting?

No. Their virtual machines are infrastructure products. Unless a separate managed service covers the work, the customer owns operating-system and application security, monitoring response, backups and recovery.

Which is cheaper, Hetzner or DigitalOcean?

There is no universal answer. Compare the exact regional compute configuration plus IP addresses, transfer, backups, snapshots, storage, load balancing, databases, support and administration time.

Which provider has better regions?

A location count is not enough. Verify the exact compute tier and every dependency in the required region, then test representative audience latency and record governance constraints.

Do stopped servers stop billing?

Do not assume so. Allocated virtual-machine resources can remain billable while powered off. Verify current deletion and retention rules before relying on shutdown as a cost control.

Are provider snapshots portable backups?

Not by default. Treat snapshots as provider-native recovery aids unless export documentation proves otherwise. Keep an application-level export, an independent copy and a tested restore path.

Does a cloud SLA guarantee application uptime?

No. An infrastructure SLA has a defined service scope, exclusions, measurement period, credit remedy and claim process. Application availability also depends on architecture and operations.

How should I test Hetzner against DigitalOcean?

Run the same application build, dataset, traffic shape, security controls and monitoring in justified regions. Set thresholds and rollback triggers before the canary starts.

Primary evidence and review boundary

Rechecked 22 October 2026. Provider documentation can change. Confirm every regional product, price and policy immediately before purchase.

Evidence checked 22 October 2026: DigitalOcean currently documents weekly backups at 20% and daily backups at 30% of Droplet cost, usage-based backups from $0.01/GiB-month, snapshots at $0.06/GiB-month and transfer overage at $0.01/GiB. Hetzner documents backups at 20% of server price with seven slots, excludes attached Volumes from server backups/snapshots, and bills Primary IPv4 separately. Recheck before purchase.
