Self-managed cloud decision guide
Keep DigitalOcean or Vultr on the shortlist only when the exact region, compute tier, dependencies, whole cost, recovery path and operating responsibility fit the same documented workload.
Provider evidence rechecked 15 October 2026. Catalogs, regions, prices and policies can change; verify the purchase surface immediately before deployment.
DigitalOcean Droplets and Vultr Cloud Compute are virtual-machine infrastructure. A friendly console or Marketplace image does not transfer operating-system, application, data and incident responsibility to the provider.
Operates the underlying platform within documented service boundaries. Read the operative SLA for the covered resource, exclusions and credit process.
Must own patching, hardening, secrets, application updates, monitoring response, backups, restore tests and capacity decisions.
If those responsibilities lack a named owner and response window, stop this comparison and evaluate a managed host or managed application path.
“Candidate” means worth testing. An unknown critical requirement blocks a decision rather than silently favoring a provider.
On smaller screens, each requirement becomes a labelled card without sideways scrolling.
| Requirement | DigitalOcean path | Vultr path | Evidence before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Linux web application | Droplet candidate | Cloud Compute candidate | Match vCPU model, memory, storage, image and operating owner |
| Sustained CPU or specialized compute | Verify the exact dedicated/configurable tier and region | Verify the exact High Frequency, High Performance or Optimized tier and region | Same build, data, load, duration and saturation thresholds |
| Managed database dependency | Candidate only where the required engine and plan exist | Candidate only where the required engine and plan exist | Region, version, network, backup, failover, limits and exit method |
| Kubernetes or load balancing | Verify DOKS and load-balancer scope in target region | Verify VKE and load-balancer scope in target region | Control-plane boundary, network, storage, health and full cost |
| Strict data-location or latency need | Candidate only after product-level regional proof | Candidate only after product-level regional proof | Representative latency distribution, governance and exit constraints |
| Managed application operations | Droplet alone does not meet this need | Cloud Compute alone does not meet this need | Name the external managed service and responsibility boundary |
| Unknown critical requirement | Do not shortlist yet | Do not shortlist yet | Resolve the unknown before cost or brand comparison |
For provider-specific depth, read the DigitalOcean evidence dossier and Vultr evidence dossier.
Map pins do not prove workload fit. Check the exact SKU and every dependency, then test from representative user networks.
Exact plan prices are deliberately omitted because region, tier, billing model and usage can change. Build one ledger per provider with amount, unit, scope, official source and access date.
Droplets are billed while resources remain allocated, and the current documentation distinguishes bundled CPU Droplets from configurable resources. Verify included outbound transfer, team pooling, public-interface accounting, reporting delay and overage for the selected plan.
Server products use hourly billing and a stopped server can remain billable while resources stay allocated. Verify regional pricing, included transfer, overage, public IP treatment and every dependency for the selected location.
Verify schedule, consistency, retention, regional scope and what happens after resource deletion.
Useful for provider-native recovery and region moves, but not automatically exportable or provider-neutral.
Keep application and data exports outside the production account, then time and validate a restore.
DigitalOcean publishes an instance-level CPU Droplet SLA. Vultr publishes operative legal SLA terms for covered platform resources. A headline percentage is not comparable until scope, exclusions, measurement, remedy, claim evidence and claim window are aligned.
Ask which resource is measured, over what period, which events are excluded and whether the remedy is a service credit.
Your service also depends on deployment design, state, DNS, databases, third parties, patching, capacity, monitoring and incident response.
No comparable Web Host Lens support-ticket experiment exists. Do not infer support speed or quality from plan labels alone.
Complete every field from evidence. The result keeps a platform on the shortlist; it never declares a universal winner.
Run the same application build, dataset, security controls, monitoring and representative traffic. Set thresholds before testing, not after seeing results.
No. Their virtual machines are infrastructure products. Unless a separate managed service covers the work, the customer owns operating-system and application security, monitoring response, backups and recovery.
There is no universal answer. Compare the exact regional compute configuration plus IP addresses, transfer, backups, snapshots, storage, load balancing, databases, support and administration time.
A location count is not enough. Verify the exact compute tier and every dependency in the required region, then test representative audience latency and record governance constraints.
Do not assume so. Allocated virtual-machine resources can remain billable while powered off. Verify current deletion and retention rules before relying on shutdown as a cost control.
Not by default. Treat snapshots as provider-native recovery aids unless export documentation proves otherwise. Keep an application-level export, an independent copy and a tested restore path.
No. An infrastructure SLA has a defined service scope, exclusions, measurement period, credit remedy and claim process. Application availability also depends on architecture and operations.
Run the same application build, dataset, traffic shape, security controls and monitoring in justified regions. Set thresholds and rollback triggers before the canary starts.
