Amazon Lightsail vs EC2: choose by workload, not brand

Lightsail can fit a bounded workload that benefits from a simplified bundle. An EC2-centred architecture fits when networking, scaling, specialized compute or deep AWS integration is a proved requirement—and the team can operate the extra components.

Evidence reviewed 8 October 2026. Prices and regional availability can change; verify them for your Region before purchase.

Start with the service boundary

Neither option is “managed hosting” by default. Both require explicit ownership of application maintenance, security, data protection and incident response. The useful comparison is how much infrastructure choice and operating work the workload actually needs.

Lightsail boundary

A focused AWS product family for websites and web applications, with virtual servers, containers, managed databases, load balancers, CDN distributions, DNS, static IPs, block storage and snapshots in a simplified interface. Bundles can make a bounded architecture easier to forecast.

Read the detailed Amazon Lightsail dossier.

EC2-centred boundary

Resizable compute with broader instance, storage, network and purchasing choices. A production design may separately use EBS, Elastic Load Balancing, Auto Scaling, CloudWatch, public IPv4, backups, databases, DNS, data transfer and support.

EC2 provides choices; it does not supply a complete or highly available architecture automatically.

Decision rule: do not compare one Lightsail bundle price with only one EC2 instance line. Compare complete, supportable architectures over the same workload and observation period.

Workload-boundary matrix

“Candidate” means worth validating, not a recommendation. Unknowns deliberately block a conclusion.

On smaller screens, each workload is shown as a labelled decision card—no sideways scrolling required.

Inventory the whole architecture cost

This browser-local inventory does not estimate a price. It prevents missing components before you use current AWS pricing for one named Region, currency and usage model.

0 of 10 cost categories acknowledged. No cost conclusion is ready.

Your selections stay in this browser and are not transmitted.

For deeper methodology, use the true hosting cost guide and the hidden limits guide.

Find the first disqualifier

Answer from documented requirements. “Unknown” returns insufficient evidence. The tool never declares either service universally best.

Insufficient evidence. Complete every field with evidence before choosing a candidate path.

Scaling and availability require a state plan

Scale up

A larger instance may buy time, but validate resize mechanics, maintenance windows, limits and rollback.

Scale out

Load balancing is not equivalent to policy-driven replacement and scaling. Define health checks, capacity rules and failure domains.

Protect state

Unhealthy instance replacement can discard local instance data. Externalize or protect sessions, uploads, databases, secrets and queues before testing replacement.

Region choice and network distance are separate decisions; use the data-centre latency guide to validate them.

Lightsail-to-EC2 migration completeness ledger

AWS snapshot export creates EC2 artifacts, not a complete application move. A supported instance snapshot can create an AMI and EBS snapshot; attached disk snapshots can create additional EBS snapshots. Export is same-Region unless the Lightsail snapshot is copied first. Some images, including the documented cPanel & WHM (CentOS 7) image, cannot be exported.

Not carried by snapshot export: managed databases, container services, load balancers, CDN distributions, static IP addresses and DNS configuration. Rebuild and test each required resource. Source Lightsail resources and exported artifacts can both incur charges until cleaned up.

Four scenario tests

Small WordPress site

Lightsail is a candidate when the supported image, plugins, traffic, restore and transfer evidence fit. EC2 is not automatically better.

Regulated multi-tier application

Custom network controls, auditable identity, managed data services and explicit failure domains can make an EC2-centred design the candidate—but only with an operating owner.

Seasonal stateless API

Health-based horizontal scaling may disqualify a simple Lightsail path. Prove state externalization, scale signals and rollback before selecting EC2 Auto Scaling.

Existing Lightsail workload

Do not migrate because growth feels likely. Name the first unmet requirement, build the complete EC2 cost and resource ledger, then canary a reversible target.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amazon Lightsail managed hosting?

No. Lightsail simplifies provisioning and bundles several resources, but you still need an operating plan for the operating system, application, security, backups and incidents unless another service provider takes that responsibility.

What is the practical difference between Lightsail and EC2?

Lightsail packages a narrower set of website and application building blocks behind a simplified interface. EC2 gives broader compute, networking, storage and purchasing choices, while the surrounding architecture must be selected and operated explicitly.

Which option is cheaper?

There is no universal winner. Compare a Lightsail bundle and every attached service with the complete EC2 architecture, including compute, EBS, load balancing, public IPv4, data transfer, monitoring, backups, DNS, databases, support and operations.

Does EC2 automatically make a site highly available?

No. High availability requires an explicit design across failure domains, health checks, replacement behavior, load balancing, data durability and tested recovery. A single EC2 instance is still a single instance.

Does Lightsail have the same Auto Scaling model as EC2?

No. Lightsail has product-specific resize and load-balancing paths. EC2 Auto Scaling uses launch templates, health checks, Availability Zone balancing and scaling policies; stateful data must be protected or externalized.

What does a Lightsail snapshot export create in EC2?

A supported instance snapshot creates an AMI and EBS snapshot; attached disk snapshots create additional EBS snapshots. Managed databases, containers, load balancers, distributions, static IPs and DNS are not migrated by that export.

Does exporting stop the original Lightsail bill?

No. Export creates copies. Original instances, snapshots and surrounding Lightsail resources continue to exist and may continue billing until you deliberately delete them after acceptance and recovery evidence is complete.
